Which online fundraising platform?

Updated 19th March 2020 following announcement of the closure of Wonderful from 1st April 2020.

As the dust settles on New Year’s resolutions, how many of you are planning to take part in a challenge event this year?! Such events provide many people with the opportunity to raise money for a charity close to their heart and online fundraising platforms are now an indispensable tool in maximising your fundraising efforts.

Which online fundraising platform to use is definitely one of the most common issues I am asked for advice on, time & time again, by both non-profits and individuals, so I have decided to update & publish some of my analysis and hopefully it may make the job of choosing

between them easier for some!

I will apologise from the outset if any of the figures quoted in my analysis are incorrect. Some organisations do change their fees so it’s worth double checking their websites directly for the most up-to-date info and particularly recently with some new players entering this market, a number of organisations have revised their fee structure. However, I would also say that some organisations are not as transparent as they could be about what exactly their fees are. I have spent an abnormal amount of time, digging through websites to research this subject and it is far from easy on some websites, to get to the bottom of exactly what those fees are, with information being buried or written in ambiguous and subjective ways.

I have also avoided using the word ‘best’ as all of these organisations are trying to do a good thing and motivated by a desire to help the non-profit sector. From my own analysis I would say there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer, as each fundraising platform has a slightly different approach, for example, through making different services and tools available or reaching different funding audiences, but it may help you narrow down which ones would work best for you.

Enough chat, here’s what you’re really interested in…..!

I am making my research freely available, however if you have found some benefit from it, please consider making a donation to Mustard Seed Autism Trust, one of the charities I work with and where my journey with finance in non-profits all started!

Finally, feel free to let me know if you spot any information which needs correcting and I will endeavour to update it!
